When George I became King of England in 1714, the General Court of the Province of Massachusetts Bay petitioned him to continue the privileges previously granted them, to encourage their production of naval stores, and to prevent the enlargement of the French settle-naent on Cape Breton Island, who had settled there in great numbers following their loss of Nova Scotia. The conflict of interests between the English and the French colonies was already appearing. In 1721 the British Board of Trade, in a detailed rapport, estimated the militia in the Province at 16, 000 men, and that the Province included also 1200 converted or friendly Indians.
